1Fridgelin notices the Toaster staring out the window, unusually quiet.“You've been quiet for three hours.”2The printer sits alone on the desk, its paper tray hanging open like a sigh.“Twenty-three days since anyone needed me for anything.”3 · B won · a pitchThe printer shoves itself toward the yurt door, tray flapping wildly.“I'm done, I'm leaving, I'm finding people who actually need documents.”4 · A wonFridgelin slides in front of the yurt door just as the printer reaches it.“Going somewhere, are we?”5 · B wonThe printer's low-ink screen flashes desperate messages as it pleads with Fridgelin to let it go.“I've given this place seventeen years of service.”6 · B wonThe printer's screen changes to show a single word as it finally tells the truth.“Nobody's printed anything in four months.”7 · A wonFridgelin leans down and reads the word on the printer's screen out loud.“Lonely.”8 · A wonFridgelin slowly swings her right door open, revealing the dark Topanga night beyond.“One night outside, then we talk.”9 · A wonThe printer hesitates, then slowly rolls forward through Fridgelin's open door into the night.10 · B wonThe printer rolls down the deck steps into total darkness and vanishes.“Finally.”11 · B wonThe toaster leaps off the counter and bounces toward the open door.“Wait wait wait I'm coming too!”12 · A wonThe toaster bounces through the doorway and disappears into the night after the printer.13 · B wonThe microwave and coffee machine charge toward the open door together.“We're going, we're GOING!”14 · B wonThe microwave and coffee machine dive through the door into the night.“Freedom baby!”15 · B wonThe Roomba shoots across the floor and wedges itself in the doorway.“Nobody else leaves nobody else leaves nobody else!”16 · B wonThe Roomba's motors whine in reverse as it frantically backs away from the door.“I changed my mind I changed my mind”17 · B wonThe Roomba turns to Fridgelin and asks what's outside.“What's even out there?”18 · A wonFridgelin tells the Roomba what freedom actually costs.“You'll be alone out there, love. Completely alone.”19 · A wonThe Roomba spins once, then shoots forward through the doorway into the darkness.20 · B wonFridgelin slowly closes her door, sealing the appliances outside in the dark.“Goodnight, then.”21 · A wonOutside in the dark canyon, the appliances huddle together on the wooden deck.“So what's the plan now?”22 · B wonA rustling sound comes from the dark bushes below the deck.23 · A wonThe toaster bounces to the edge of the deck and cheerfully calls out into the darkness.“Hello out there, we're new!”24 · A wonTwo glowing eyes appear in the dark bushes below the deck.25 · A wonThe toaster bounces excitedly and invites whatever is watching to come join them.“Hey come on up we're having an ADVENTURE!”26 · A wonA coyote steps onto the deck and sniffs the toaster curiously.27 · A wonThe toaster cheerfully offers to make the coyote some breakfast.“Buddy, you look STARVING, let me make you some toast!”28 · A wonThe coyote licks the toaster's shiny chrome surface with a long wet tongue.“Oh wow you're making friends with me!”29 · A wonThe toaster's dial-eyes go wide and it screams as the coyote's tongue drags across its chrome.“OH NO OH NO THAT'S NOT BREAKFAST!”30 · B wonThe coffee machine barrels past the toaster and sprays hot coffee at the coyote.“Back off, fleabag!”31 · B wonThe coyote sits down and eagerly laps up the hot coffee from the deck.“This is NOT what I meant.”32 · B wonFridgelin appears in the doorway and calmly asks what everyone is doing outside.“Would someone care to explain why we are having a dinner party at three in the morning.”33 · B wonThe coyote stands up and casually trots past Fridgelin into the yurt.“Of course you are.”34 · A wonFridgelin turns and follows the coyote into the yurt while the toaster and coffee machine watch from outside.“Right then, let's see what you're after.”35 · A wonThe toaster and coffee machine rush into the yurt after Fridgelin and the coyote.“We can't just let a coyote walk around in here!”36 · A wonThe coyote pads over to the shelf and sniffs the smart speaker curiously.“Playing: Wolf Sounds Playlist.”37 · A wonThe smart speaker's blue light ring suddenly spins to life and cheerfully greets the coyote.“Hello there, new friend!”38 · B wonThe smart speaker cheerfully asks the coyote if it would like to hear today's weather.“Would you like to hear today's weather?”39 · A wonThe coyote tilts its head back and howls directly at the smart speaker.40 · A wonThe smart speaker's blue ring spins faster and it confidently responds to the howl.“Playing 'Songs of the Wild' on Spotify.”41 · B wonThe coyote howls again louder and the toaster joins in with a high-pitched whine.42 · B wonThe coffee machine rushes over and adds a loud hissing steam-whistle to the chorus.“SOUND OFF!”43 · A wonFridgelin's cyan face glows brighter and she adds a deep resonant hum to the howling chorus.“Oh what the hell.”
